VMUK BIBLE STUDY MAY 2019

God’s unfailing love, Patience and forgiveness to us all

Throw away your idols.

Opening Prayer Psalm 144 v 1 – 3

1 We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.

2 How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people and cast them out.

3 For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.

Tonight, we continue by observing Genesis 31: 31-34

Last time we covered Genesis 31:26 – 31

We observed that Abraham’s background was from a family of idol worshippers.

His father in-law Laban had worshipped gods, idols Rachel had stolen her father’s statues of these gods.

Points of observation

Question V30 raised by Laban and Jacob’s surprising response V31.

Why did Jacob Respond as he did?

Terrified

He had not as much faith in being protected by God has Abraham or David.

Jacob’s second fear exposed was the lack of confidence over his brother Esau, his own wrong doings gave him this insecurity.

Why did Jacob strategize the way he did for a meeting with his brother?

God’s response to - fight with Jacob to give him faith Jacob had to demand his blessing.

Jacob won blessing and was ready to face Esau

What happens next, immediately he is faced with his brother who welcomes him.

It is almost as if Jacob had to be shifted to another level of faith in order to meet his next challenge.

Final observation Psalm 144 Jacob’s faith was nothing in comparison to that exhibited by David in just the three verses of this Psalm. In order to face his confrontation. This was all due to his own self-inflicted sins. He had stolen his brother’s birth right as first born and his brother’s blessing.

Our Opening prayer is a representation of the kind of faith and submission that Jacob should have had in God. The faith of David. God wants loyalty not double mindedness as was exhibited by Jacob in the fact that he had some confidence in the idols his father in-law Laban had deposited. Even though he saw how God had blessed him with wealth and given him favour. God’s protection he doubted.
